Barbados lost their opening game of the Concacaf Under 20 Championships 2-0 to Costa Rica in Miami, Florida at the IMG Academy.

Both teams went into the half-time break without registering on the score sheet, however when play resumed captain Diego Mesen gave Costa Rica the 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.

Costa Rica then doubled their advantage from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute thanks to Ronaldo Araya. Barbados’ goal keeper Liam Braithwaite wasted his side’s stubborn defensive tactics, when he brought down Josue Abarca in the area forcing the referee to award a spot kick.

Araya then converted despite Braithwaite diving in the right direction and getting a glove on the ball.

The result means that Costa Rica are now top of Group E with six points from two games while Barbados currently sit in fourth position with no points. (AG-B)
