Another chapter in the history of Barbados’ Parliament began yesterday when the first female Deputy Clerk of the House of Assembly took office.
Beverly Gibbons has worked as a secretary to former Prime Minister Owen Arthur both as Opposition Leader and as Prime Minister, and also with current Prime Minister Mia Mottley when she was Opposition Leader.
During this time she pursued legal studies at the University of the West Indies and Hugh Wooding Law School. She was admitted to the Bar in January 2017.
Welcoming the new Deputy Clerk to her first day on the job, Leader of Government Business in the House Santia Bradshaw cited the appointment as another example of women in Barbados “breaking the glass ceiling”.
Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley also welcomed Gibbons.
Gibbons told the MIDWEEK NATION during the lunch break: “I am very happy and yet humbled, thanking God for the experience to break the ceiling, so to speak, in the male-dominated field. Hopefully I will do my best.”
She is working alongside Clerk of the House Nigel Jones. (GC)
