UNITED STATES ruled the pounding waves on the windy East Coast of Bathsheba yesterday, but Barbados could feel pleased with second finishes for Che Allan and Chelsea Roett on the final day of surfing competition at the PEG Independence Festival.
Chauncey Robinson, who hails from Melbourne Beach, Florida, was the man of the hour, climaxing a memorable week by capturing the TSL Independence Pro to complete the double after conquering the World Surfing League Thomo QS 1000 on Saturday.
Allan, who was seeking to win the Independence Pro for the third straight year, had to settle for second best in an engrossing final, where he clashed with the Americans Robinson and Luke Gordon, along with Jamaican Icah Wilmont.
On another overcast day, the 20-year-old Robinson, who was runner-up last year, silenced the scores of local fans from the outset with a near perfect hit of the reef that earned him an impressive 9.50 wave score. The teenaged Allan responded with a score of 7.70, while Gordon scored 4.53, and Wilmont 4.33. It meant that the contest was a two-man tussle.(MK)
