Vendors who ply their trade outside the Grantley Adams Memorial School were yesterday asked by the police to vacate the premises of the school.
After plying their trade at the school for more than 45 years combined, the four vendors said they were informed yesterday morning that the area by the bus stop where they set up was also school property.
The situation at the Blackman’s, St Joseph school was brought to public attention earlier this week when principal of the school, Valdez Francis, banned the children from buying food from outside vendors, and instructed them to purchase only from the school’s canteen.
During the week, the principal locked the gates, prohibiting the students from going outside and even standing vigil during the lunch hour to ensure that they didn’t venture out.
One of the usual four vendors, who requested anonymity, said the police approached her just before lunch time and asked her to leave the premises.
“The police officers came and asked me to pack up and leave from where I was because I was on school premises. So I packed up and left and came to the other side of the road. They told me if I go back on the premises to sell I would be arrested,” she said. (DB)
