Decision on Senate hat pending

THE ANGLICAN BISHOP of Barbados-designate has not yet turned his attention to whether he will remain an Independent senator in Parliament.

That, said Senator Reverend Michael Maxwell, was a question he would have to discuss with Governor General Dame Sandra Mason and with God.

The 47-year-old rector of Holy Trinity Church in Ruby, St Philip, was speaking after the provincial House of Bishops announced on Friday that he would be heading the Anglican Church in Barbados.

This was after a protracted struggle between the House of Laity and the House of Clergy failed to choose a successor to retired Bishop Dr John Holder.

Maxwell, in an interview with Starcom Network’s Davis Ellis, admitted that any attempt to function as both an Independent senator and as Bishop of Barbados might be too much.

“That is a discussion that I will have to have with the Governor General and I will try my best to make a meeting with her as soon as possible.

“I will be able to inform of my decision again on that because I still have to reference her and, more importantly, talk to God in my own reflection and prayer as to if it is something I will continue,” he said.

“But for right now, I think it is going to be a lot to do both, but I will discuss it with her [the Governor General] and get her perspective and also I will pray about it.” (HLE)
