The sport of kings got itself another knight on a very special Independence Day.
Local horseracing was in the winner’s circle yesterday after four of its stalwarts made the Independence Honours list headed by new knight Sir Kenneth Hewitt.
It was quite the payout for a racing industry that saw Sandy Lane owner Derrick Smith receiving the Companion Of Honour on the same day champion trainers Robert Peirce and Victor Cheeseman were awarded the Silver Crown Of Merit and the Barbados Service Star, respectively.
“Well, we couldn’t have expected a day like this, but I can say we can’t be any more proud of these individuals for getting their long overdue recognition,” said Barbados Turf Club chief executive officer and Peirce’s wife, Rosette.
“Their awards are more than well deserved and I expect so many more people in our industry to be honoured for their service to this country. A lot of people don’t understand how many people the Turf Club and horseracing on a whole employs,” she added.
Recognised for his contribution to the development of the international business sector, Sir Kenneth has served as a steward and long-standing member of the BTC before acting as Governor-General earlier this year. (JM)
