State of fear

AS THE HEAD OF the largest public sector union raises concerns about the psychological state of civil servants, the island’s Minister of Labour has a word of caution for those accused of “sabotaging” the retrenchment process.

Minister Colin Jordan said those people were not hurting Government, but causing psychological harm to ordinary men and women being sent home under the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme.

“I want to be very clear, and the Government wants to be clear, that if indeed sabotage is the word and sabotage is actually what happened, the people who are impacted by those missteps are ordinary working people. You are not getting at the Government by having those missteps,” he said while participating in Voice Of Barbados’ BrassTacks Sunday call-in programme.

His comments came as president of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Akanni McDowall, told THE NATION that many remaining civil servants were working under a cloud of psychological fear in the wake of the way the retrenchment process, at some organisations, was done. (HLE)
