Government’s plans to upscale fish markets across Barbados have received the approval of the Barbados National Union of Fisherfolk Organisations (BARNUFO).
On Sunday, Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy Kirk Humphrey said they intended to replace the tile counter tops with stainless steel, which BARNUFO president Vernel Nicholls said was a step in the right direction.
“The state of our markets in some ways is embarrassing . . . because if you look at the markets now, a lot of the counter tops are tiled and with a lot of grout. And a lot of the tiles are broken, the plumbing is leaking and the cupboards are falling apart.
“So the markets haven’t seen any real repair in a while, but we as a Government have determined that we want to make all the counter tops in every market in Barbados stainless steel, so that the fish would not be in an area that lends itself to bacteria,” Humphrey said. (TG)
