Government’s new budget “appears feasible” but the Barbados Economics Society (BES) sees “little wiggle room” in the plan.
With debate on the 2019-2020 Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure scheduled to start on Monday, BES president Simon Naitram said: “We need discipline and unity to achieve this plan”.
“But most importantly, we need to focus on policies and investment that would grow the economy. Without doubt, economic growth is the key to prosperity.”
Government’s budget for the new financial year starting on April 1 outlined $3.18 billion in expenditure and spending of $3.14 billion, which was a $32.3 million fiscal deficit. This compared to the 2018-2019 expenditure of $4.52 billion and revenue of $3.23 billion, (a $1.29 billion fiscal deficit).
Naitram said “on numbers alone, there’s much to like about the Government’s plan for the coming 12 months”. (SC)
