Architectural technicians are breathing a sigh of relief that they now have a wider scope of operation than was originally proposed in the new town and country planning laws.
Amendments to the Planning and Development Act passed last month permit the draughtsmen to continue to design single dwelling houses, duplexes and up to ten apartments.
Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley advised the House of Assembly of the changes while introducing the Planning and Development Bill 2018.
“There was a very reasonable set of representations made that would see us reverse sections of the Bill that would otherwise negatively affect draughtsmen. My Government is not insensitive and therefore has heard the representations and has asked that the following amendment be made in committee so as to facilitate the ability of draughtsmen to be able to continue to work on single dwelling houses and duplexes and apartments up to ten apartments which would significantly allow them to continue their way of life.”
President of the 50-member association of draughtsmen, Kelvin Martin, has welcomed news of the amendment.
“I think that at least it allows manoeuvring room. We are quite happy that we got the position from two (apartments) to nine as proposed in the original legislation. At least we can now continue to earn a living,” he said.
