Champion jockey Rasheed Hughes produced a fine ride to guide Celestial Storm to an upset victory in the 38th Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup at the Garrison Savannah today.
Drawn at no. 1 and in at odds of 14-1, Celestial Storm, the lone filly in the 10-horse field, stormed past leader Infrared in the closing stages to win the top prize of $120 000 and the glittering Gold Cup.
Infrared, who threatened to pull off a pole-to-pole victory, finished second with eight-time champion jockey Anderson Trotman aboard.
Pre-race favourite Night Prowler with jockey Jalon Samuel seeking a record fifth Gold Cup win, was last at the half-way stage of the nine-furlong race, but fought back to finish third. (HG)
