Less than two weeks after it started, the 2019 sugar harvest has to come to a temporary halt.

The electrical capacitor bank at Portvale Factory in Blowers, St James, overheated and caught afire early Tuesday morning, affecting the boilers and other equipment.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Indar Weir told THE NATION the factory would be closed for about a week while an assessment is conducted.

He explained the Barbados Fire Service extinguished the fire and factory officials would have to remove the water it used to ensure the area was safe. (SAT)
