Government’s amendment to the Bail Act has received some approval from the court of public opinion. But the jury is still out on the gun amnesty.
In hopes of reducing the number of illegal firearms on the streets, Attorney General Dale Marshall announced in the House of Assembly on Tuesday that Government would be offering a one-week gun amnesty from April 7 to 13. People can turn in illegal guns, ammunition and firearm parts to any police station without fear of prosecution.
Barbados had a six-month gun amnesty in 1983, while the last one in 1998 was for three weeks. The latter yielded 93 illegal guns ranging from .22 calibre revolvers to rifles and shotguns.
However, Barbadians were sceptical about whether this amnesty would be successful. (TG)
