Gems score another victory

The Bajan Gems are almost guaranteed of winning their fourth Jean Pierre Regional Under-16 netball crown after romping to their fifth successive win by crushing Grenada 37-9 at the YMCA courts in St John’s, Antigua.

The Barbadians’ lopsided victory, similar to their previous four matches, was established with quarter scores of 8-1, 22-5 and 29-5. The Gems will play their final game which will be against St Lucia today, with St Lucia being the closest to the Bajans, having lost just one game.

However, it would take a ridiculous shift in goals difference for Barbados to lose to St Lucia and lose the title.

Damia Walrond, a 13-year-old student from Lester Vaughan, led the rout against Grenada with 17 goals from 20 shots. Sumara Benn came on from the third quarter to sink 11 goals from 19 while Chiara Chase added nine from 14.

Coach Cameron Greenidge pointed to his team taking part in the domestic Division 3 league as properly preparing them for the regional tournament.

“We put in the work and we left with the self-belief that we were going to win the tournament and we have maintained the effort to fulfil that belief,” said Greenidge. (KB)
