Lisa Toppin-Corbin, the new president of Soroptimist International of Barbados (SIB), believes in the power of sisterhood.
Female friendships and relationships, she said, help counteract patriarchy and misogyny. Friendships also provide comfort, security and healing while relationships are based on giving and receiving moral support, sharing stories and experiences, and caring and nurturing each other.
Simply put, women need each other as they often put aside caring for themselves to help and elevate other women.
Lisa’s observations were made recently during her first address as president at the 56th annual general meeting.
It was there that she was officially handed the mantle of the club and was installed as leader by patron, Governor General Dame Sandra Mason.
“As a club of women, when we open our eyes, our minds and our hearts, we are faced with a certain reality. We are far more alike that we are different. We have the same struggles. … We have the same goals and aspirations. (DS)
