AS OF LAST WEDNESDAY, eight guns and 873 bullets were turned in under the Government’s one-week gun amnesty.
Attorney General Dale Marshall, who is out of the island, said yesterday that when he returned, he would receive an update from the Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith on the final numbers after the amnesty ended on Saturday.
He said the majority of guns submitted belonged to people who had died.
“To be frank, the expectation was not really that we would have gotten large numbers. The historical facts in relation to the gun amnesties in Barbados before, you tend to get relatively small amounts of firearms and some that are old,” he explained.
In an interview with Starcom Network, Marshall said he knew some people were suggesting that one week was not sufficient time to submit the guns, but he insisted that was more than enough.
“I don’t know how long it would take for someone to decide to hand in an illegal firearm. I think that’s just one of these excuses,” he added.
