Win keeps St Barnabas on course

Defending champions St Barnabas “A” remained in the hunt to retain their league crown when they defeated main rivals C.O. Williams Rangers 36-26 in a low-scoring Division 1 netball match on Friday night at the Netball Stadium.

By the time that St Barnabas eased to victory, most of the spectators had left and did not see the conclusion of a limp display between two of the biggest names in netball. A poor 12-6 first quarter was made poorer in the second, with St Barnabas scoring just five goals and Rangers three.

While the superior prowess of Barbados defenders Shonette Bruce for St Barnabas and Rhe-Ann Niles for Rangers created fear and failure for the respective shooters, the poor ball handling of both teams in mid-court was evident by the number of turnovers.

Niles was commanding in stripping or intercepting passes, but the ball often returned after Rangers turned it over, their shooters missed or they were turned back by the skills and power of Bruce. (KB)
