Jordan: Folk in the north want Sandals

Member of Parliament for St Peter, Colin Jordan, says many of his constituents want the Sandals Beaches development to go ahead.

The multimillion-dollar hotel project at Heywoods, St Peter, has been stalled as Government and the developers appear to be at odds over aspects of the concessions originally granted to the Jamaica-based international hotel chain.

Speaking in the House of Assembly yesterday, Jordan said people in the north recognised that Sandals Beaches would “generate jobs, other kinds of benefits for the residents and the other stakeholders in St Peter” and wanted to see the hotel built.

However, Jordan said he told them: “Like we say to the investors in Carlisle Bay and the investors in Hyatt, it will not be at any cost. We will seek investment, we will encourage investment, we will facilitate investment, but at the end of the day, the country as a whole must be the beneficiary.”

Jordan, a former president of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, sided with Minister of Tourism Kerrie Symmonds on his position that local and foreign investment in hotel development was absolutely necessary, as he supported a resolution for acquisition of land at Bay Street for construction of the Hyatt Centric Hotel. (GC)
