Homeowners happy with rebuilding efforts
TWO HOMES destroyed in different circumstances are well on their way to being rebuilt.
Last October 12, Esther Clarke, along with four children, sister, her sister’s child and a grandson, lost her childhood home in Brathwaite’s Road, Sion Hill, St James, to a fire. They have been staying with relatives since then.
From earlier this year, volunteers from neighbouring communities, the Newbury Sports Club, and churches such as Mount Zion’s Missions, St James Methodist Church, the Seventh-Day Adventists and Carlton Mount Calvary churches, and members of corporate Barbados, came together to assist Clarke.
Rebuilding effort
On Tuesday, Glenroy Jordan, who has been leading the rebuilding effort, and who is also a relative, was busy trying to complete the five-bedroom wall structure. The destroyed house was a smaller wood and wall property.
“We are just trying to push it as fast as possible so everyone can unite, but I am pleased with where it’s at right now,” Jordan said.
A short distance away in Westmoreland, Eaton Skeete was pleased with the progress made on his structure.
The 70-year-old retired Government worker’s house was badly damaged on March 18 after a trailer with an excavator on top, that had been parked alongside it, slipped in an early morning incident.
Skeete said he was looking forward to moving back in during the summer.
“Everything is going smoothly so far,” he added.
He has been staying close by at an apartment in St Silas Heights, thanks to contributions from Black Bess Quarry, which owned the equipment, and its insurance company. (TG)
VOLUNTEERS have been helping with the new Clarke home in Sion Hill, St James. The original was destroyed by fire last October.
