THINGS ARE LOOKING UP in the tourism sector, with last year’s numbers and those for the first half of 2019 showing increased visitors, and more money being spent by them.
Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Kerrie Symmonds, revealed yesterday that according to the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, visitor spend in Barbados increased by US$200 million in 2018, moving from US$1 billion in 2017 to US$1.2 billion last year.
In terms of arrivals, between January and May, the island attracted 324 551 stay-over visitors.
“That is a 13 907 increase over where we were January to May for the corresponding period in 2018,” Symmonds told the annual general meeting of Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre yesterday. (RA)
