Help for Cheryl

Share post:

Cheryl Gooding is optimistic that help is finally on the way.

Yesterday, officials from the Welfare Department, the National Assistance Board (NAB) and a nurse visited the 64-year-old woman at her My Lord’s Hill, St Michael, home.

Gooding, who lives alone and is unable to walk because of diabetes, was highlighted by The Nation on Thursday appealing for help since she has no running water and a caretaker is only able to visit for short periods twice a day. She spends all day in bed on her back because she cannot walk and she has no one else to care for her.

Gooding said officials from the agencies questioned her extensively and also inspected the surroundings.

“They asked me what I wanted and I told them I wanted water connected to the house and home help assistance. I told them if that was not possible, I would like to be given a welfare house.”

However, Gooding was adamant she did not want to be institutionalised at the Geriatric Hospital where she said she had unpleasant experiences with some of the staff during a three-month stint.

Several Barbadians reacted with compassion upon reading of Gooding’s plight and also appealed to Government to step in.

So far, two people have visited Gooding – a man who took water – and a woman who is also a home help assistant, who offered help with home care. (MB)
