Jones strides into Diamond League

Rising track star Jonathan Jones has been invited to compete in the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Jones was rewarded with an IAAF Diamond League debut after making a name for himself on the United States’ collegiate circuit this season and earning rave reviews.

The Texas University freshman sped a personal best 44.64 seconds to set a new Barbados’ 400 metres record at the NCAA Division 1 finals in Austin, Texas, earlier this month. He became the first Barbadian to achieve a sub-45 seconds clocking in the event.

Jones, who hails from Checker Hall, St Lucy, broke compatriot Elvis Forde’s 1984 record of 45.32 seconds when he posted 45.02 seconds at the NCAA Western Regionals in May. (EZS)
