Prime Minister Mia Mottley yesterday revealed her administration would from next year present eligible Barbadians a Freedom of Barbados award, the second highest honour in the land, behind only National Hero.
The new award will be on the same level of the Dame or Knight of St Andrew, and awardees could opt to receive one or the other.
Mottley was speaking during a post-Cabinet press conference at Government Headquarters on Bay Street, saying Cabinet approved framework for the process last week, to be established by an Act of Parliament.
“We agreed that a person can opt for the Knight or Dame of St Andrew or the Freedom of Barbados. They will be treated at the same level,” the Prime Minister told reporters. “A person who receives the honour will be referred to as the ‘Most Honourable’, and there would be no more than three, though two honorary ones can be awarded every year.” (BA)
