FOR 80 GRUELLING laps Barbados’ cycling fans dared to dream as Amber Joseph moved from fourth to third and then second to be battling for a medal in the women’s omnium at the Pan Am Games on Saturday night.

The chill in the impressive and spanking new velodrome was toasted on the track as United States’ Jennifer Valente set a blistering pace, dragging along Joseph in her slip-stream as the Bajan talent moved from her fourth position to second.

That prompted the group of officials and medical personnel to unfurl a large Barbados flag with hopes of greatness materialising on the track.

However, with Valente demonstrating her superior speed, tactics and experience, she and Mexico’s Lizbeth Salazar established that the gold and silver were already engraved, leaving the other 15 riders to battle for bronze. (KB)
