Sonjina a guiding light for youth

Share post:

At just 26 years old, Sonjina Kirton wears quite a few hats – figuratively speaking, of course.

She has been a teacher at the Ursuline Convent School for the past five years and is a trained singer and worship leader at Calvary Moravian Church. Kirton is also the secretary of the Barbados Moravian Youth Council – a position she has held for nine consecutive years – and created history when she became the youngest Sunday School superintendent within the Moravian Church here in Barbados. She took up that post just two years ago.

When one considers all that Kirton has achieved since leaving her alma mater Ellerslie Secondary School in 2008, it is easy to understand why she has such a huge interest in seeing young people rise up and succeed. In fact, her advice to the youth of Barbados is simple: “Remain focused, and always have standards and morals for yourself.”

This is the same advice Kirton has followed throughout the years, and especially after her mother died at the age of 47, when Kirton was just 18 years old.

Kirton enjoys working with young people and helping to shape their lives. And while initially she did not see herself as a mentor, she is definitely a mentor to scores of young people.

“At first I never saw myself as a mentor since I’m still young and I need mentoring too,” she said with a chuckle, “because there are times of frustration for me [as well]. But, at the end of the day, I cannot see myself doing anything other than teaching and helping young people.”

Recalling the days when she would go outdoors and teach the trees in her backyard and use her back door as her chalkboard, Kirton admits she could never see herself doing anything other than teaching, whether in the classroom or Sunday School at church. (CH)
