IT’S ROCK HARD for the final win in the region’s cement war.
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) yesterday ruled that a decision made earlier this year by CARICOM’s Council of Trade and Economic Development (COTED) regarding what tariff imported by Rock Hard Cement should attract, was in good standing.
That means the Barbadian-owned Rock Hard Cement will now attract a Common External Tariff of no more than five per cent, a ruling that is sure to have an immediate, and telling effect on the region’s cement industry.
Yesterday’s decision on what tariff should be applied to Rock Hard products was another loss for plaintiffs the state of Trinidad and Tobago, and Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), which had also lost in June when the CCJ had ruled in favour of Rock Hard, sticking with COTED’s classification of the Rock Hard product as Other Hydraulic Cement, and not Building Cement Grey.
