Three-time Olympian Nicky Neckles is still ruling the swimming pool. The Flying Fish Barbados Masters swimmer swam to another record-breaking feat en route to winning the gold medal at the 18th FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in South Korea on Monday.
Competing in 200 metres backstroke for the 40-44 age group, Neckles hit the board in 2:08.06 minutes to obliterate the old mark of 2:11.13 minutes, which was established by Spain’s Frederik Hviid in August 2014.
Italy’s Maurizio Tersar secured the silver medal in 2:13.17 minutes while Czech Rostislav Vitek took the bronze in 2:19.37.
Last month, the 40-year-old Neckles, who is regarded as Barbados’ most decorated swimmer, made a triumphant return to competitive swimming after a seven-year retirement break. (EZS)
