Sport is no barrier to progress in academics.

Moreover, chess helps with academics. And vice versa.

That’s the story emerging from three national junior chess representatives on the list of Barbados scholarship and exhibition winners announced last week by the Ministry of Education.

The trio is beaming with a sense of accomplishment following their success in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE).

Shane Maughn, a student of Queen’s College, who has been a consistent member of the Barbados team to the CARIFTA Chess Championships since 2015, was awarded a scholarship after securing Grade 1s in computer science, physics, pure mathematics, Caribbean studies and communication studies. (HG)
