LESS MONEY FOR FEWER ATHLETES.
Some of the island’s most promising junior athletes will have to do it on their own, as they will no longer receive a monthly grant from the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA).
The association was forced to make the harsh decision following a change to its funding model, which was costing over $1 million annually, for a total of 71 athletes.
However, the BOA now only has 17 athletes reaping the major sweets in the Elite category, which includes Pan American gold medallist Shane Brathwaite and tennis ace Darian King.
Barbados’ best female swimmer and CARIFTA gold medallist Danielle Titus, and Nkosi Dunwoody are among 12 local athletes who have been impacted, losing a reported $500 per month.
Both Titus and Dunwoody are now part of a new Emerging athletes’ category which focuses on Barbados’ upcoming sportspeople.
