Spartans from Church Village will create history in 2020 by becoming the first basketball team out of St Philip to compete in the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s Premier Division.
The Spartans earned their rights of passage on Thursday night with an impressive 86-76 win over the University of the West Indies Blackbirds at the Wildey Gymnasium.
A game-high 29 points from the hyperactive Theo Greenidge including a critical three-pointer and an and-1 play in the final minutes of the game along with 22 from Philip Harewood and 13 from Dale Franklyn gave plenty of cheer for the Spartans and their supporters.
Ayinde Bernard (16), Oliver Silveira (14) and the slimly built six-footer Jamar King with 13 points tried to match the aggression of the Spartans in attack and defence. But, after the Spartans nullified a 19-22 first quarter deficit to control the next three quarters, the Blackbirds plummeted to earth.
With a total team effort piloted by Greenidge who played every minute of the game tormenting UWI with his drives to the basket or passes to other shooting threat, the Spartans outscored their opponents 23-12 in the second quarter to take charge.
