Schoolboy referees will soon be introduced to take charge of matches in the Barbados Secondary Schools Football League (BSSFL).
And the step being taken by the Barbados Football Association (BFA) to offer a referee course to youngsters will fix the recurring problem of insufficient referees to oversee matches in the competition, says president of the league Wren Ramsey.
“The BFA is supposed to be putting on a refereeing course for schoolboys this year. It was supposed to start this week but due to some circumstances that they didn’t plan for, it was pushed back,” he said.
“One of the problems that we have is that our games are played at 3:30 p.m. Some people are still at work or might be going to their shifts, so getting referees to cover schools games is a big problem,” Ramey told THE NATION, ahead of the opening match of the new season between SJPI and Frederick Smith on Friday at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex.
