Chattel insurance concern

THE ONLY THING preventing Barbadians from getting fire insurance for their chattel houses is themselves.

In response to a call for insurance companies to make fire insurance for chattel houses more accessible and affordable, president of the General Insurance Association of Barbados, Goulbourne Alleyne, said it was already available.

“At a minimum, fire insurance is available to all property owners, including chattel house owners. The only reason it would not be is if the house is in deplorable condition as, generally speaking, an insurance company will only insure a house in good insurable condition,” he said.

Yesterday around 11 a.m., fire destroyed an Urban Development Commission (UDC) chattel house in Gunsite Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, as well as a neighbouring wall and timber house. Neither was insured. (CA)
