Women still have to convince the public that the challenges they face in dealing with abortion are not a figment of their imagination, says Marsha Hinds, president of the National Organisation of Women (NOW).
She was speaking at the start of a theatre production that comprised a short dance choreography entitled Becoming, and a play, Whispers, as part of the organisation’s activist theatre forum geared to sustain discussion on national issues other than reactions to what is a “backdrop of a news story associated with a particular incident”.
The theatre event, which dealt with pro-life and pro-choice with reference to abortion, came off at the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre in Queens Park on Sunday afternoon.
Hinds said that abortion was legal in Barbados since 1983, with a “sound piece of legislation that governs access to abortion. However, because we have not dealt with the perceptions around the abortion, it remains largely taboo with women refusing to access the service sometimes due to their perceptions as to how they [will be] treated when they try to access”.
