Several restaurants along the South and West Coast were earlier tonight turning away walk-in customers because they had little supply of natural gas to prepare meals.
The problem also extended to Chefette in Warrens, St Michael where they had a sign up telling customers they would only be able to provide sandwiches, salads, drinks, shakes and rotis until stock ran out.
Officials at Chefette said the problem started there minutes to 8 p.m. It is unclear when the restaurants on either coast started to experience difficulties.
Reached moments before 10 p.m., Alex McDonald, chairman of the Barbados National Oil Company, said it was a mechanical issue at the Belle Pumping Station that was the cause of the difficulty.
“It is not a problem with supply. It appears to be a mechanical issue with the equipment,” he said, adding that workmen were on the job seeking to rectify the situation. (SP)
