There are major concerns about the fate of the elderly in the event of a tsunami.
The matter was raised Thursday by residents at a public discussion on Tsunami Preparedness organised by the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) at Fisherman’s Pub in St Peter.
An earthquake between Cuba and Jamaica last week heightened concerns of a tsunami in the region.
Phillip Denny, along with owner of Fisherman’s Pub, Clement Armstrong, said there was an absence of signs and early-warning systems while getting the elderly to higher ground with limited time was another issue.
Denny noted that Speightstown and its environs were flood prone which had led to the death of one person. It was noted by Armstrong that the waves were encroaching on the properties and the road. (HH)
