A quick response from staff at the Barbados Football Association averted major damage to their astroturf at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, St Michael, earlier today.
Fire broke out in some bush to the southern side of the facility and staff quickly grabbed hoses from the compound and started fighting the fire.
President Randy Harris was on site when a Nation team arrived. As smoke billowed across the facility, he said there was slight damage to the fence.
“I am just hoping that it would not find its way in or on the pitch because that would be the end of our playing surface. This is artificial turf and it would just melt away.”
Fire officials subsequently arrived and contained the fire before 1 p.m.
The BFA started hosting matches at the Astroturf in April 2018. The facility is not completed as officials have submitted plans to have a 3 000-seat capacity grand stand built on the site. (SAT)
