Local medical officials expect that more paediatric procedures will be done locally within the next seven years.

They say this should happen as a result of the establishment of the Shaw Centre for Paediatric Excellence at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

During a ceremony at Ilaro Court to launch the partnership Monday, director of capacity building at the Centre for Global Health SickKids Canada, Brian Smith, explained that the project has several long and short-term objectives.

The centre will allow for two local postdoctoral fellowships in paediatric research, the training of40 paediatric nurses to be redeployed across the health care system, the training of four physicians in high-need paediatric subspecialities, the establishment of a patient amenity fund to support families from the Eastern Caribbean to access care at the QEH, refurbishment of child health polyclinics and the paediatric ward at the QEH and procurement of new equipment.
