As the global death toll from the coronavirus surges pass 12 000, confirmed cases near 300 000, Barbados’ United Nations diplomat wants the world body to hold a virtual town hall type meeting that would provide people everywhere with much needed information about the deadly disease.

Liz Thompson, Barbados’ Ambassador in New York, said that senior diplomats, many of them occupying key positions “should show strong leadership” and the virtual town hall session would provide essential information to a global audience.

“In the face of the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, what people across the world want and need, is credible information on health and economic fears and a place to voice their concerns,” she said.

“Only the United Nations can give the multilateral global response, coordination and leadership that is needed now.” (TB)
