Scores of elderly people were upset about the delayed arrival of cash at The St Thomas Post Office at Welchman Hall today.
Some pensioners arrived from as early as 5 a.m., hopeful they would be first in line by the time the office opened at 8 a.m.
However, cashing of cheques began just after 11 a.m. Those in the line, which snaked its way to Stony Gully, said the delay was unacceptable.
Post offices were scheduled to open at 8 a.m. today to facilitate the cashing of all pension and welfare cheques. The opening hours were 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at all branches except the Airport Post Office.
On April 8, there were long lines outside the various branches as people went to cash cheques. However, there was a late start, and some people complained the 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. slot was not long enough.
Government had announced specific days for cashing of pension cheques as part of efforts to limit the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), while still giving people access to cash. (TG)
