Scores of vendors who sell produce along Cheapside, The City, set up their trays as early as 6:30 this morning hoping to make sales.
However, they were not supposed to resume selling today as originally stated by Prime Minister Mia Mottley in her national address last Saturday.
The Ministry of Agriculture’s manager of markets, Sherlock King, said that the demarcation of vending spots was not completed and they were in the process of allocating vendors to specific areas.
Some vendors will be moved to the nearby Jubilee Gardens and the Lower Green Van Stand.
This is an effort to spread out vendors so the protocol of physical distancing can be maintained. Shoppers would be asked to queue and wait to be dispatched by vendors.
Today, just before 10, King, officials from the ministry’s market division and police officers told the vendors to move until spots were assigned and it was publicly announced they could return.
Some vendors said they felt disappointed having to return home.
Mottley announced new shopping and banking hours, by surname, which came into effect today. (SB)
These vendors had to pack up their produce after police said they would not be allowed to sell.
