Barbados has been touted as a possible venue to host the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) Twenty20 cricket tournament with Kensington Oval being transformed into a “social distancing” stadium given the coronavirus pandemic.
With international sports brought to a halt by the virus which has resulted in more than two million infections worldwide, organisers are still optimistic about staging the eighth edition of the franchise tournament slated for August 19 to September 26.
“We are hoping that the tournament can go ahead as planned, but we are also looking at a number of contingency plans in case that is not possible,” chief operations officer of CPL, Pete Russell, told Saturday Sport during a telephone interview yesterday.
“The priority right now is the health and well-being of people across the Caribbean but we know the economic impact CPL makes and how much our wonderful fans look forward to it each year. So we are working hard on a number of plans to make the tournament happen.
