Astor B. Watts, an the elder of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) passed away today.

The 98-year-old, who celebrated his birthday two days ago, was still politically active and maintained a presence at the weekly DLP lunchtime lecture series named in his honour.

The lectures have been running since 2000 at party headquarters, George Street, St Michael.

President of the DLP Verla De Peiza described Watts as an example of true loyalty.

“He joined the Democratic Labour Party in its fledgling days and walked tall alongside noted cornerstones like Errol Barrow, Branford Taitt and James Tudor. He was not afraid to debate them on issues and was active from early in policy development,” she said.

De Peiza said that Watts, who up to January this year was commenting on the fortunes of the party, never failed to defend the DLP.

“In the best of times and the worst of times, Astor B raised his voice publicly on the call-in programmes in defence and promotion of his beloved party. We have lost a warrior whose contribution will never be forgotten. Thank you to his family, particularly his daughter, for sharing him with us. Our loss is acute, yours unmeasurable,” De Peiza stated. (AC)
