140 pregnant cows being imported

The Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS) and the Barbados Beef and Dairy Association are embarking on a million-dollar project that would eventually boost milk production.

It is expected that in about two weeks, 140 pregnant heifers will be imported from the Strickland Ranch and Export Inc., in the United States.

Chief executive officer of the BAS, James Paul, said the importation was necessary because farmers’ herds were shrinking.

“One of the reasons we need the import is that the farmers had to make some adjustments and a lot of the cows were culled before 2016 and onward and the herds were not up to full capacity,” he said. (SB)
