Skinner making strides in aquathlon

Barbadian athlete Niel Skinner is now ranked number one among aquathlon competitors from English-speaking nations.

The 17-year-old, who tied for 19th position in the world with Hungary’s Attila Arany while competing in the run/swim event, which is a subset of the triathlon, told Sun Sport he was pleased to have achieved such results on the world stage.

“I was quite surprised because after the Santa Marta CAMTRI Aquathlon American Championships I was 50th in the world and then I did the competition here in Barbados and the points brought me forward to tie with another athlete in 19th. I was quite proud of myself. That really shocked me and I am very grateful,” he said.

When the American championships were held in Colombia between late May and June last year, he placed third in the juniors and eighth overall. (RG)
