Georgetown – The Guyana Police Force is reporting that eight uniformed guards from the Presidential Guard Unit were recently tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

In a brief statement, the police force said that random tests were done on ranks and the eight positive results were returned. The first two tests date back to early April while the recent tests were conducted just over two weeks ago.

These are not new cases and are included in the total number of cases in Guyana.

The Presidential Guard Unit provides security for the President and Prime Minister and their official residences as well as security for the former presidents.

It was reported that the guards who tested positive are not those who are part of the Body Protection Unit which provides direct bodyguard services for the Head of State.

The uniformed guards are the ones that usually provide security for the Office of the President and the official residences.

To date, there are 69 active cases of the coronavirus in Guyana. (CMC)
