Muslim families mark Eid at home

THE CUSTOMARY amplified sound from minarets towering over mosques calling the Muslim faithful to prayer was absent today, as Muslims throughout Barbados joined in prayer on the festival of Eid-al-Fitr within the confines of their homes.

Ordinarily a day of widespread celebration with family and friends and the distribution of gifts, Eid celebrations this year have been tempered by the restrictions associated with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

COVID-19 czar Richard Carter had warned the Muslim community against engaging in the kind of mass public activities that customarily mark the end of the Muslim month of Ramadan.

In compliance, Muslims stayed at home today and prayed and feasted with their families, according to the number restrictions set out under the lockdown regulations. (GC)
