Ralph “Bruggadung” Johnson, a pillar in sports administration and an integral figure in the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA), is dead.
Johnson, a household name in yachting with the success of his boat Bruggadung, was one of the stalwarts of the local Olympic movement, serving for many years as vice-president of the BOA. He passed away at home this morning at the age of 80.
He was a former President of the Barbados Yachting Association, the Barbados Squash Rackets Association, the Caribbean Area Squash Rackets Association and the Caribbean Yachting Association.
In his wide and varied sporting career, he has played water polo, and squash, participated in motorsport, and water skiing, and represented Barbados in boxing.
Johnson was also the kingpin and driving force behind major businesses such as Harris Paints, Lucky Horseshoe and Bagatelle Great House.
His son, James Johnson, is the number one golfer in this country. (MK)
