The two St Joseph men accused of burning an African Green monkey alive made their first appearance in the District “F” Magistrates’ Court on May 29.

Matthew Omar Downes, a 36-year-old spray painter, of Pasture Lane, Lammings, St Joseph, and 30-year-old mechanic Rico Jamar Maynard, of Airy Hill, also in St Joseph, denied that between April 3 and 20 this year, they each wantonly and cruelly abused and caused unnecessary suffering to an African Green monkey in contravention of the Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Act.

Prosecutor Sergeant Theodore McClean did not object to the two being released on bail but asked that the sum be substantial.

The prosecutor also asked that the two accused have nothing to do with monkeys or any domesticated animal as part of their bail. (HLE)
