It only takes a single storm system to spell disaster and with another prediction for a higher-than-normal hurricane season – which starts tomorrow – Acting Director of the Barbados Meteorological Service Sabu Best is warning Barbadians not to be complacent.

“The forecast predicts a higher-than-average season, a really intense season. Remember, a single system can be catastrophic. So we must always be prepared as most systems affect Barbados – indirectly, if not directly,” he said.

Best was speaking during the Department of Emergency Management’s (DEM) 2020 Atlantic hurricane season press conference yesterday at the General Post Office.

He showed predictions from various global agencies which said around 28 weather systems were expected this year – 16 storms, eight hurricanes and four major hurricanes (category five or higher). He said two systems had already formed though they had dissipated but this was still evidence of the major activity to come. (CA)
