A 74-year-old fish vendor succumbed to her injuries after being pinned by a car in the car park of the Berinda Cox Fish Market in Oistins, Christ Church earlier this evening.
She was identified as Rita Hunte of Upper Carters Gap, while Dorothy Hall, 63, of Sayers Court, both in Christ Church, complained of injuries to her right foot.
The car was driven by a 54-year-old man and it had been parked on the northern side of the car park. He had just moved off, when according to police, “for some reason still under investigation”, the vehicle accelerated across the car park, struck another vehicle, mounted the sidewalk and collided with the two women.
They were sitting under a wooden structure where the fish vendors ply their trade and Hunte was pinned to a wooden post. She was transported by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) with severe injuries, compound fractures to both feet and injuries to her lower torso. She died at the hospital.
Hall was also taken to the QEH by ambulance for treatment.
The driver did not complain of any injuries.
One fire tender with eight personnel also responded but did not have to use equipment.
Police investigations are continuing. This is the fifth fatal accident for 2020. (PR/SAT)
